These
spectacles aim to emphasize the architectural heritage of a city in a very original
and present way.
These
are very entertaining and do not damage the monument. The lights are kept at a
distance that can’t spoil the architecture so there is no problem with the
center of national monuments whose aim is to protect heritage. They put their
veto when a company wants to use fireworks that can be dangerous for the
monument. I can quote the case of Laon, that used fireworks for the 2011 show
but didn’t for the same show in 2012 because it was too much trouble with the
center of national monuments.
Furthermore,
these shows need to be done with the consent of the church that can give its
approval or not when they see the project and the theme of the show. We can hardly
imagine a projection of Satan or something against the Catholic Church thrown
on the cathedral.
These
sons et lumière can sometimes allow
the discovery of architectural details (like the lines of construction,
gargoyles, polychromies, stain-glasses…) to a public that didn’t even know they
existed. It’s a new way to make them discover architecture and art, and it’s an
amusing and didactic way
This following video is an extract from Reims's spectacle in 2013, we can see that the tecnicians presented all the lines of the cathedral thanks to the lights. It's as if the cathedral was built in front of our eyes.
